Permanent residence after studying in Australia

Obtaining permanent residency after studying in Australia
Most people who go to Australia on a student visa want to continue living in Australia after graduation. This article examines the conditions for obtaining postgraduate residency in Australia.

International students can apply for a post-graduate work visa (Subclass 485) upon graduation. This visa is only granted to people who have completed their education in Australia and have successfully obtained their degree.
If the applicant has graduated from undergraduate level, the duration of this visa is 18 months, and if he / she graduated from undergraduate level and above, he / she can receive a 3, 2 or 4 year visa based on the graduation level. The maximum application period for this visa is 4 months and the applicant and his / her companions are required to be present in Australia at the time of applying for this visa and announcing the result of the application. This visa allows the applicant to work and study in Australia and the applicant can enter the permanent residency process in the future. The advantage of the 485 visa is that the applicant can earn a higher score in the Select Scale rating system by completing an education in Australia and having work experience related to a degree, and apply for a specialty and skill visa.

Many people think that obtaining a 485 visa is an easy task, while it has been seen many times that successful and professional people have made mistakes in the process of obtaining this visa, which has led to the rejection of their application.

Mistakes that may occur in the visa application process include:

  • Wrong action for subclass:

This visa has two branches:

1- 485 Graduate Work: For people who have studied in Australia before 5 November 2011 or have studied undergraduate and have a job that is on Australia’s list of required jobs. This visa is valid for 18 months.

2-485 Post Study Work: It can be done for people who have graduated in bachelor’s degree and above and is valid for 2 to 4 years depending on the degree.

If the visa application is not submitted on the correct branch, the visa will be rejected or the visa will be obtained for a shorter period of time.

  • Failure to pay attention to the requirements when applying for a visa

If all the required documents for the visa are not provided at the time of submitting the application, the visa application will be rejected. Therefore, you must fully consider the details of the requested documents and prepare them.

  • Requirements related to the duration of study in Australia

To be eligible for a 485 visa, applicants must have completed at least one CRICOS registered course of more than 2 academic years or 92 weeks. Also, the total duration of study should not be less than 16 months.

If, for any reason, you have spent time outside of Australia during your studies, there is a risk that your 16 months of study will not be proven and your visa application will be rejected.

In addition, you may lose 5 extra points that you can earn while studying in Australia in the Select Select system.

  • The 485 visa can only be applied for from within Australia.

Many people leave Australia after graduation to visit family and family. You should note that the University will notify the Immigration Service of this when you complete your studies. When your student visa is revoked, you will not be allowed to re-enter Australia unless you have obtained another visa to enter Australia.

Therefore, you must apply for a 485 visa before leaving Australia to determine your intention to return to Australia.

  • Eligibility to apply for a visa

Unlike specialty and skill visas, the 485 visa does not have a rating system. To obtain this visa, you must meet the following conditions:

  • Age under 50 years
  • Provide the required language certificate
  • 2 years of study in Australia
  • There is no more than 6 months between graduation and applying for a 485 visa
